Patrolman Dolphus Schmelzla

Patrolman Dolphus Schmelzla died from injuries sustained in a car crash while driving into work.

ATKINS, AR - The Atkins Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its officers.

Patrolman Dolphus Schmelzla, 47, died Thursday night from injuries suffered in a car accident while on his way to work.

The wreck happened at the intersection of East Main Street and Tyler Road in Russellville.

Officer Schmelzla had more than 20 years of law enforcement experience. He started his career in Yell County at the Sheriff’s Office where he worked for about one year before joining the Ola Police Department for two years and then the Morrilton Police Department for another two years. He then joined the Atkins Police Department in March of 2001.

In a news release, the Atkins Police Department said Schmelzla was a great and valued officer who will be missed tremendously by the Atkins Police Department, as well as other law enforcement agencies around the area.
